Golgota Picnic is one of García’s iconic shows. It is a witty critique of consumer society, based on the deconstruction of the figure and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth. Drawing on Christian iconography, from Francisco Goya to Rubens, García organises a picnic, which is also the last supper of contemporary times. Immersed in an excess of images and sounds, the show transforms into a radically ascetic oratorio in the finale. The show’s unusual combination of a critical message, powerful images and poetry transfixes the audience.

RODRIGO GARCÍA (born 1964), the curator of this year’s Idiom, is an Argentinian director, playwright and actor. At the age of 22 he left Buenos Aires for Madrid where, in 1989, he founded his own theatre group La Carnicería Teatro (Slaughterhouse Theatre). García shocks, threatens and insults in order to provoke, to trigger in the audience a desire to oppose, to contradict and to search for an escape from a world subordinated to violence, power and consumption. In 2009 he received the Europe Prize New Theatrical Realities, awarded to artists who uncover new avenues of reflection and expression in contemporary theatre.
