We wish to devote the debate opening Malta Festival Poznań 2014 to the subject of democratic transformations which were brought about by the first free parliamentary elections in Poland. Twenty four years ago, enjoying the newly regained sovereignty – including the freedom of assembly – we formed Malta Festival.

The participation in the debate of guests who influenced the shape of today’s Poland will become a pretext to ask questions about freedom with respect to both artistic expression and its social dimension. The debate will be part of a nationwide project “Kino Wolność” held under the honorary patronage of President of the Republic of Poland Bronisław Komorowski. The project’s aim is to arouse national consciousness, the sense of unity and community of a free, democratic society on the 25th anniversary of the first free parliamentary elections in Poland. Film screenings, talks and debates with local leaders of the democratic transformations in 1989 and with artists are being organized in Poland and around the world.
