In the early 19th century, towns were populated by a total of no more than thirty million people. Over the subsequent century this number grew to two billion. If the process of migration from rural areas into cities is not responded to with an appropriate development policy, urbanisation may take on the form of slums. Gary Hustwit focuses on the designing of cities and demonstrates that in the age of advancing urbanisation, urban design is one of the major challenges faced by the modern world. By referring to valuable architectural history and town planning experience, and to contemporary civic movements and expert opinions, he shows who and how really shapes our cities.
